Subject: Update - Gypsy Traveller encampment at Western Edge Park, Perth
Purpose
The purpose of this briefing is to provide an update regarding a current Gypsy Traveller encampment at Western Edge Park.
Details
The encampment of Gypsy Travellers which arrived at Western Edge Park in Perth earlier this week remains on site.
Environmental Health and Safer Communities Wardens have visited the site, most recently on 29 May. 11 caravans were noted on site and the area was very quiet and clean. Officers noted that dogs were tethered and there was no waste aside from a few black bags. Vehicle movements appeared to be making little impact on the ground conditions and there were no indications of work vehicles on site.
Officers spoke to around half the families on site, and they agreed to vacating the site on Saturday 31 May. The families on site were reminded that the area they are located in is a popular public park and unsuitable for an encampment with vehicles and caravans. They were advised that the local community require regular use of the whole area for recreational purposes and that the Council therefore expects them to vacate the park as soon as possible and no later than tomorrow, Saturday 31 May.
Arrangements have been made for our Wardens to attend over the weekend and provide an update, especially in relation to the encampment moving off site. Steps will be taken to remove black bags of waste over the weekend. To date approximately 40 enquiries have been received from residents, but with no particular focus regarding any complaints made. Those enquiring have been made aware of the Saturday deadline for departure and the Council's intention to take legal action if this does not occur.
Next steps
The Council will continue monitoring the site over the weekend and if it is not vacated as previously agreed, legal action will be instigated.
We will update you with any further developments.
