Details

Purpose

This briefing note has been produced to update elected members on the progress of the repairs to the historic sections of the Perth Town Lade following a small collapse of the culvert on 2 December 2024 at Canal Street, Perth.

Briefing Information

Repair

A specialist contractor was appointed to carry out repairs to damaged historical sections of the Perth Town Lade at Canal Street. The most recent repairs (since the last update on 14 January 2025) involved masonry reinstatement and concrete works at the two identified defective sections.

The masonry and concrete were allowed time to cure and strengthen over a period of time, and the temporary timber support formworks that were placed around the inside of the arch barrel were finally removed from the Lade on 27 January 2025.

Following the removal of the timber support formwork required for the masonry and concrete works, Tayside Contracts completed the carriageway resurfacing works on 29 January 2025.

The traffic management and single lane road closure that was put in place to facilitate the works was removed on 30 January 2025.

It should be noted that Scottish Water will have a single lane road closure at Canal Street commencing 3 February 2025 to allow them to carry out works on their assets in this area. This is due to end on 5 February 2025. Unfortunately, there were no opportunities to combine road closures due to the emergency nature of the Lade defect repair works required.

Further investigations

Later this year the Flooding Team will carry out a more comprehensive and extensive CCTV condition survey of the full historical sections of the Perth Town Lade, subject to access and health and safety considerations.

The primary known route of the historic Lade commences from Mill Street, and follows South Methven Street, Canal Crescent to its outfall to the River Tay on Canal Street. It is thought that adjoining spurs of the Lade may exist and these will be identified and CCTV surveyed where possible.

Further updates will be provided to elected members in due course.
