Elected Member Briefing Note 2026, No. 05

About this Briefing Note

Report by: Lisa Potter, Service Manager - Strategic Communications and Engagement

Date: 21 January 2026

Subject: Weather update 9pm, 21 January 2026

Details

Purpose

To provide an update in the light of amber weather warning.

Briefing Information

The Met Office issued a Yellow rain warning for parts of Perth and Kinross earlier this afternoon, which was subsequently updated to an Amber warning for parts of Perthshire, including Perth.

The Amber warning is in place from midnight tonight until 6pm tomorrow, with the original Yellow warning remaining in place until midnight on Friday.

Perth Flood Scheme

As per the Perth Flood Scheme arrangements the South Inch flood gates were closed this afternoon ahead of the Yellow rain warning.

As you will be aware other flood gates in the Perth scheme are triggered by tide levels and river flow data rather than rain warnings. This data is provided to the Council by SEPA.

The Roads Maintenance Partnership have advised that the most recent update this evening from SEPA indicates that at high tide, at 5am, the flow will remain below the trigger for shutting any additional gates. Further checks will be made ahead of high tide to ensure that there is no change which would necessitate further action.

Unrelated road closure

Separately to the weather warnings our Roads team have also been contacted by police to notify of a road closure on the C4932 between the B947 at Essendy Bridge and the C430 Loch of Clunie while emergency services deal with a house fire.

There have been no other requests for Council support related to this incident.
