About this Briefing Note

EMBN Number: 031-26

Subject: Update on diesel spillage into Loch Tay, Saturday 21 February 2026

Purpose

This Briefing Note provides information on a Housing Need and Demand Survey being carried out by Perth and Kinross Council.

Briefing Information

Following the diesel spill incident near Killin, clean-up activities are in place with specialist contractors instructed by Certas Energy and being supported by multiagency partners including SEPA, Scottish Water, NHS, Stirling and Perth and Kinross Councils, and other emergency response partners.

There is evidence of some contamination in Loch Tay which may be travelling downstream into the River Tay. Scottish Water has taken precautionary measures to safeguard the public drinking water supply in Perth and Kinross and continues to monitor the situation.

A communication has been issued on the Council's social media platforms advising residents who use a private water supply that abstracts water from Loch Tay or the River Tay to report any suspected contamination to Scottish Water on 0800 0778 778.

We are also advising the public not to enter the water in Loch Tay or the River Tay in the Highland Perthshire or Stirling Council areas, or allow pets to enter the water, as a precaution at this time.

Scottish Water's information and support point remains open at McLaren Hall, Main Street, FK21 8TN, and their customer support staff can be contacted on 0800 0778 778 for any queries.

We will provide any further updates when they become available.
