Elected Member Briefing - Street Weeds

Elected Member Briefing Note 2026, No. 42

About this Briefing Note

Report by: Andy Clegg, Service Manager

Date: 20 March 2026

Subject: Street Weeds

Details

Purpose

Further to the recent Elected Member Briefing on Street Weed Clearing 2025, I would like to provide an update on this season's street weed control contract.

Briefing Information

All contractors have now been appointed, and spraying is scheduled to begin in May. We will optimise the start date in line with seasonal growth and agree this with the contractors. A second treatment is expected around late July or August, and regrowth will be monitored throughout the season.

We will be using a residual chemical treatment this year, which should reduce regrowth, and the specification has been updated to allow greater flexibility in scheduling.

Service improvements: We have listened to concerns raised in the Eastern area. For example, moss was scraped from a footpath in Blairgowrie. Moss removal is not part of the weed control contract, as the chemical used does not treat moss, but where there are clear safety issues we will assess what can be done within available budgets. We have also sent a contractor to remove some weeds in Kinross. We have added link paths in housing areas and roundabouts.

Contract management: The contract manager and will be carrying out regular monitoring. The wider team will also report issues as they encounter them. If you see any concerns or areas needing attention, please feel free to contact Community Greenspace.
